The Complete Guide to Network Sniffers

Tech Tips

Network Sniffers are the Programs which are used to Capture the Low Level Data Package Data that is been Transmitted over a Network. It also can Intercept and log traffic that passes over a digital network .As data streams flow across the network, the sniffer captures each packet and, if needed, decodes the packet’s raw data, showing the values of various fields in the packet, and analyzes its content according to the appropriate RFC or other specifications.
In this Article you will soon be Introduced to Common Network Sniffing Techniques and tools to sniff Networks.

First of All you Must have to Read About IP Address,Default Gateway and Subnet Mask.

Difference Between IP Address and MAC Address ::

IP stands for Internet Protocol. It is used to Uniquely identify a Computer on a Network. There are Currently two Versions of Internet Protocol,IPv4 and IPv6. IPv4 uses a 32 bit Address.Due to the Massive Population Growth in the Technological Field IPv6 was Created and it uses a 128 bit Address.IPv4 uses a Decimal Format and IPv6 uses a Hexadecimal Format.

MAC stands for Media Access Control. It is used to Uniquely Identify the Network Interfaces for Communication at the Physical Layer of the Network.MAC are usually imbedded into the Network Card only.

What is Network Sniffing ?

Computers Communicate with Each Other on a Network using IP Addresses.Once the Message has been sent on a Network by one Computer to the Second Computer. The Second Computer with the Matching IP Responds with its MAC Address. As you have read in the Beginning only that Network Sniffing is the Process of Intercepting Data over a Wi-Fi  Network. There are Many Softwares for Network Sniffing.

Below is a List of Protocols that are Vulnerable to Sniffing ::

The above Protocols are Vulnerable if the Login Text details are Sent in form of Plain Text.

Basically Sniffing is of Two Types ,Active and Passive.

Hub–>It works by Sending broadcast Messages to all the Output Ports on it Except the one through which the broadcast was sent.
Switch–>It Maps the IP/MAC Addresses to the Physical Ports.
Passive Sniffing–>Intercepting Packages that are Transmitted over a Network that uses Hub.
Active Sniffing–>Intercepting Packages that are Transmitted over a Network that uses Switch.
